Coach Don Fuerhoff claimed his biggest victory on August 28, 2014. He passed away in his home at Edgewater, surrounded by his family. Born on April 17, 1936, in Beemer, Nebraska, Don remained a committed Cornhusker until the very end.
After graduating from Wayne State College, Don married his college sweetheart and the love of his life, Jo Ann Stephens, on June 1, 1957. After serving in the Army in Washington, the young couple moved to Iowa to begin their careers in teaching and coaching. Don completed his masters degree at the University of Wyoming and they were soon blessed with their son, Ty. A daughter, Jill, was born while teaching in Lake City, IA, and the young family eventually moved to Iowa Falls before finally settling in Knoxville. Don coached and taught high school History and retired in 1994. He also spent many years working at Knoxville Raceway.
Don believed in the Lord with a faith that could not be shaken. After the tragic death of his wife, he enjoyed his time living in West Des Moines where he was close to the kids and could attend all of the grandkids' events. Until the very end, he loved hearing about everybody's kids and giving them advice on school, athletics, and life.
Don is survived by Ty and his wife, Jill; daughter, Jill and her husband, Mark Oman; his favorite blessings, his grandchildren, Taylor and Ashley Fuerhoff, Lexie and Scott Oman; his sister, Verlene Gunderson; his nieces and nephew and their families, Jean Brooks, Gary Gunderson, and Jane Wilbeck, all from Nebraska. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Selma Fuerhoff and his brother-in-law, Gerald Gunderson.
In addition to his close friends from Knoxville, Don leaves behind many friends from Nebraska and Arizona with whom he enjoyed many laughs and winters. Family will greet friends after 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 2 at Lutheran Church of Hope, West Des Moines. His memorial service begins at 3 p.m. Tuesday followed by Don's favorite vices...ice cream and cookies.
The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the staff at Edgewater who cared for him the last three and a half years and loved him as their own. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Knoxville Dollars for Scholars for the Jo and Don Fuerhoff Scholarship.
